New meaning of GALAMSEY....

*GALAMSEY* Ë YAO AGBENYO Whenever we hear the term GALAMSEY, it takes our minds to the illegal mining activities of some Chinese in Ghana. Its very sad to note that the Ghanaian Government looks on while these Chinese exploit and molest our people on our own land. Xenophobia, has also kept the Ghanaians away from confronting these Chinese to demand their rights. Our police service does very little to help the situation: the Chinese have arrogated to themselves portions of land that cannot be stepped on by the natives, they rape our people, they exploit our children and molest our mothers and fathers while they, the illegal migrants live in affluence and enjoyment at the expense of the owners of the land. One really wonders whether our police are afraid of these people and whether colonialism is still with us or the neo colonialism prophesied by the prophet Kwame Nkrumah is supposed to take this form. BUT WELL, However, current trends reveal a different meaning to the term *GALAMSEY*. Before I reveal this new meaning, let me state that I have also a number of times used the word anytime I wanted to sneak out of school to teach elsewhere or do some other work as a hard working man, for some coins. Oscar Wilde coined the word *"bunbury"* through his fictitious dramatic persona, Algernon Moncrief in *The Importance of Being Earnest.* The term bunbury is used by Algy in reference to a non existent friend of his, whose sick bed he's constantly being summoned to, anytime he wanted to sneak out and go have fun or meet a lover in town. Eventually he has to tell a lie that his friend has died in order to stop his deception. "Bunbury" then refers to *SNEAKING OUT TO DO SOMETHING ILLEGAL.* Now to our SECRET NEW MEANING What Oscar Wilde calls bunburying is the center of our discussion today. In one Senior high school I had an internship, the students and teachers coined this term to refer to something else. As stated earlier, I used the term to refer to my sneaking out to teach or do some work elsewhere for "noko fioooo". Then a student came for counseling, and there she revealed many things I never paid attention to. Amongst her revelations is some teachers' constant pestering for sexual exchanges.(some are just mere allegations based on suspicions)Two of these teachers who she claimed had proposed to her are married with children. One I later discovered was an elder in a big church. *Yet they want to use my girl for a garden.* In spite of having lawful wives and children at home, these teachers still had an evil and inordinate desire to sleep with the very students they teach. Sadly (if true). The girl further mentioned several names who are dating one teacher or the other and those who have advised her to accept the proposals with numerous sumptuous deceptive words describing such a DESTRUCTIVE ACTION. I went to the field as an expert counselor who doesn't work with rumors and one man stories, to verify her claims. The results were stupendous!!! You could find one teacher dating about five or more of these students whose future is still in the molding. This action must be condemned. Teachers should try as much to control themselves and avoid any amorous relationship with their students. Surprisingly, the students find it a thing of pride to be dating a teacher, and those "privileged" to be in a sexual date with teachers look down on those dating "small boys" (their mates) and they ain't ashamed to even let you know!!! THEY CALL THIS GALAMSEY!!! It is there in your corporate office, in your church, the banks, even the psychiatry and in government establishments. Its not only in schools. This galamsey is illegal and is different from a clean relationship that leads to marriage. GALAMSEY, whether in its modern terms or former meaning must be condemned.
